Director Jan Eliasberg (the first woman ever to direct a Miami Vice
episode) makes an assured feature debut with this low-key, superbly
crafted thriller. Natasha Richardson plays a social worker who comes
to believe, against the hue and cry of her fellow townspeople,
that the paroled murderer she's been assigned to counsel (Rutger
Hauer) is innocent of the crime for which he was sent away--and
for which folks still want to see him hanged. She's also in love
with him, and this topples her into a maze of deadly ambiguities
against which neither her training nor her instincts are any protection.
A solid, smart film. --F.X. Feeney
In this thriller a man falsely imprisoned for murdering
his wife, finishes his 15 year sentence and then falls in love with
his lovely parole officer who believes in him. Things go well
until someone threatens the officer and begins trying to get him back
in prison. --
